How to Deal With More Than One Emotion

Did you know that when we have an emotionally charged event we can experience MULTIPLE emotions related to a single event!

An emotionally charged experience can make us feel sad, and mad, and insecure, and disappointed, and scared at the same time because it’s most likely triggering different past experiences and fears. Working with clients I see the struggle and confusion when I ask them, “what emotion is coming up right now?”

It can be challenging naming what emotion is present because:

  1. Sometimes it can be more than one emotion present.

  2. We aren’t used to naming what we are feeling/ emotions (we've been taught as a society for so long to push down our feelings and not acknowledge them)

  3. We are more used to talking about what HAPPENED versus **** HOW DID IT MAKE US FEEL?…

Tapping helps you not only identify the present emotion, it helps you see ALL OF THE LAYERS of emotions that are attached to the single event and it's related triggers. It's no wonder something so small can become emotionally so big; it's most likely there is more than one emotion present as well as another past event that is being triggered.

SO, try playing with NAMING YOUR PRESENT EMOTION next time you are experiencing an intense experience.

*** There is so much power in being able to identify what you are feeling, in order to move through your intense experience.

Here’s a list of some emotions:
